They decide their lives, not HIV Here is a story of how adversity decides to hold the lives of a few youngsters in its grip and finally gives up in desperation. Thirty men and women infected with HIV from across the country met at a special matchmaking event in surat and decided not to let the disease decide the way they led their lives. They agreed to marry each other, hoping to end the isolation the deadly infection often brings. |

Marriage will give him and his partner physical and emotional support, said the 32 yearsold man, who agreed to marry an HIV Infected woman from the south and adopt her children. "Only an HIV-Positive person can understand and respect my status. We live uncertain lives. Now we will enjoy every bit of whatever life has in store for us, " said Joshi who has been ostracized by his parents and friends. Daksha Patel, a coordinator at the 'Network of Surat People living with HIV+', the group which organized the matchmaking event, said the aim was to bring together as many infected people as possible to help them find partners. India has the world's highest HIV/AIDS caseload with 5.7 million infected people. Although the country reported its first case in 1986, most victims face acute stigma due to a lack of awareness and misconceptions about the disease. |
